Let's review what being professional means in the 21st century.


According to the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, It Is Illegal to ask people about their:
  • Race, Color, or National Origin

  • Religion

  • Sex

  • Gender Identity

  • Sexual Orientation

  • Pregnancy status

  • Disability

  • Age or Genetic Information

  • Citizenship

  • Marital Status

  • Number of Children

The University of Dayton provides a helpful table of appropriate versus inappropriate questions to ask of potential employers/ employees.


Following a dress code is also critical and adds to your overall persuasiveness as a communicator. Let's look at infographics to discuss what makes for an appropriate or inappropriate outfit.

With the time that remains, I want to encourage you to work through the guidelines on pages 137-8 in Chapter 6. Figure out how you might make questions clearer than they currently are, decide who will do what, and be sure to share your strengths. Let your partner know how these strengths influence your ability to collaborate and what kind of work you like to take the lead on.


For homework, please prepare your professional attire and questions. You'll want to be sure to review the rubric, too.
