Although we're here to explore the celebrated genre of the résumé, we need to start with your personal brand.
Our thinking about branding can be better informed by two considerations, your strengths and the job ad you want to pursue. For our attendance question, tell us about these two considerations. Make a name tent to display your strengths. Time permitting, let's freewrite a little bit in response to these questions:
If you could summarize your personal brand in three words or fewer, what would they be? Why? How does this brand match your strengths? How does this brand reflect the job you're pursuing?
During the second part of class, we welcome Elizabeth McDonald of TWU Career Connections, who will give us a different perspective that may contrast or complement the perspective the Technical Communication authors take.
For homework, please read TC, Ch. 3 (“Writing Technical Documents”), Ch. 5 (“Analyzing Your Audience and Purpose”) and Ch. 11 (“Designing Print and Online Documents”) + “The Big Four: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, Proximity.” Also, please enjoy these job-seeking cats.
